This stunning Regency period double-ended settee with a deep buttoned black leather finish and three removable cushions has crisply carved leaf decoration and turned scrolled ears to the back. The front arm supports are carved with acanthus and lotus leaf decoration with the trademark 'Gillow Shell'. Either side of the centre seat rail are carved flower heads above turned and reeded legs with outswept rosewood legs to the back. The original gilt brass castors are stamped 'Copes'.
The settee has recently been recovered.
The Gillow shell carving is more commonly seen on Gillow hall chairs. It is unusual to be found on other seated furniture particularly in rosewood.

A set of twelve Regency mahogany dining chairs attributed to Gillow, Lot 40, Sale 'The Glory of Gillows' 16th September 2004 were sold at Christies, King Street, London. The chairs had a centre carved shell to the back splat which was very similar to this rosewood settee.
