William and his cousin Thomas Wilkinson operated a successful cabinet making business at 9 & 10 Brokers Row, Moorfields. In 1807 William left to take over the old established firm of Quentin Kaye in Ludgate Hill, In the early to mid 1820s William brought his two Sons William Ayscough Wilkinson and Charles Wilkinson into the business, which then changed its name from William Wilkinson, cabinet-maker and upholder, to William Wilkinson & Sons.
