S.W.Reynolds was a mezzotinter, and occasional portrait and landscape painter. He was taught mezzotint engraving by John Smith and in turn he taught Samuel Cousins and David Lucas. He was patronised by Samuel Whitbread, who sorted out his financial affairs. He exhibited at the RA between 1797-1827 and Paris between 1825 & 28, exhibiting several mezzotints at the Salon of 1827.
The original painting of The Mill by Rembrandt van Rijn is held at National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries The Mill was well known to connoisseurs and artists who valued it as one of Rembrandt's greatest creations.
