James Peel was born in Newcastle in the North of England in 1811. Specialising in landscapes he travelled the British Isles in search of the most picturesque views. Peel was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London from 1847-1892 and a member of the society of British Artists from 1871. His work is collected worldwide and is in museums in London (The Victoria and Albert), Glasgow, Leeds, Montreal, Sunderland and Borrowdale.
