William John Patton McDowell was born and raised in Barrow-in-Furness. After leaving school at the age of 14 he served an apprenticeship at the famous Vickers Shipyard eventually entering their drawing offices, which have always given his work an understandable degree of precision and detail. He studied naval architecture and he grew to know all about the construction of ships whilst at the Barrow yard. Following the end of World War I, he left Vickers and became a full-time marine artist, specializing in commercial work for the large shipping companies such as Cunard, White Star Line and Union Castle as part of their advertising campaigns. Some of his work was also a number of private commissions and he also became an associate member of the Institute of Naval Architects.

He exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and published an illustrated book entitled The Shape of Ships.
