Most elegant early 19th Century mahogany Stick Barometer with ‘'swan-neck' pediment over signed, finely engraved silvered brass register plate, bearing manually operated vernier slide and protected by lockable door with canted, reeded frame. The trunk, edge moulded, ebony banded and veneered in figured mahogany with original concealed barometer tube terminating behind turned cistern cover.


A noted Mathematical Instrument Maker, Bate won the commission to make all hydrometers for the Excise Office, and subsequently gained an excellent reputation for a wide range of scientific instruments, particularly barometers, working from premises in Poultry from 1808-47.
