A very elegant and beautifully patinated George II period walnut table clock by this London maker. The 8-day movement, which strikes the hours on a single bell, has a restored verge escapement and short bob pendulum. There is a subsidiary dial in the arch for Strike/Silent. The maker’s signature Robert Player LONDON is engraved on the chapter ring between V and VII.
The dial has gilt mask head and foliate corner spandrels and a Roman chapter ring with Arabic outer minutes. The date indicator is inset above VI and there is a crescent shaped aperture for the false pendulum within the finely matted dial centre. The elaborate backplate is engraved with a wheatear border, flower and foliate scrolls and the maker’s signature.

The elegant case is constructed primarily in oak and veneered with highly figured walnut. It has an elaborate inverted bell top with a knopped brass carrying handle and foliate urn finials.

Height: 19 in (48.5 cm) excluding handle

* Robert Player was both a clockmaker and clock case maker who is recorded as working in London between 1700 and 1742. Walnut table clocks of such elegance and with great patina are increasingly rare.
