This precise and delicate drawing of Rochester Castle shows that it had changed little from when J. Loch drew it from the same viewpoint c.1802. Nicholls invests his work with the same sense of timeless classicism which characterizes his oil paintings, and the degree of finish of the castle as it rises on its eminence from the woods around it indicates that it may be one of the initial studies for his painting of Rochester Castle (Bradford Museums & Galleries). In the latter work the castle is shown from the other side, in the castle grounds, but since it is symmetrical the silhouette of the building is precisely the same as in this drawing. The Bradford painting is in a squarer format, stressing the drama and permanence of the massive mediaeval fortress, whereas the drawing sites the castle within a busy settlement, complete with church, houses and jetties.
