James Noble was a still life painter who was born in London in 1919. He developed his artistic talent by attending evening classes in London under the well-known Scottish landscape painter and engraver Iain MacNab (1890-1967), whilst working for the family’s building and decorating business. During World War II, he served as an assault engineer in the Infantry, but still continued to draw. In 1957, he had his first solo exhibition at the Bond Street Gallery, London. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Painters. Noble was influenced by the 17th century Dutch romantic artists, combining the old master tradition of flower painting with his own simplistic and often stylised approach to his compositions. |
