This view may represent part of Peter the Great's " Aptekarsky Ogorod " or Apothecary Garden with one of the domed greenhouses in the middle distance. The garden was founded by Peter the Great in 1706 to grow medicinal plants. The garden's twenty-five greenhouses were constructed later in 1823-24.

The Karpovka is a small river of the Neva basin in St. Petersburg. It separates Aptekarsky Island from Petrogradsky Island.
