The original paintings of these engravings included those copied from existing prints of the ancestral Imperial family, followed by contemporary portraits which were painted on enamel shortly after Alexander 1’s victory over Napoleon. They are possibly the most celebrated work of the portrait artist, Benner, who spent many years in the court of Alexander 1 in St. Petersburg as appointed court painter. Andre Joseph Mecou, portrait engraver, was b. Grenoble in 1771 and d. Paris 1837.
