This exquisite centrepiece was crafted in the mid-19th Century in the fashionable Sèvres style. Sèvres style porcelain wares, like this piece, were often decorated with flowers, putti, exotic birds, pastoral and mythological scenes, and marine subjects. These were carefully hand-painted in white spaces on pink, turquoise, green, yellow, or royal blue—‘bleu celeste’—coloured grounds. The paintings and borders were frequently gilded with beading, scrolls or trellis patterns, and paint was often applied in a form of jewelled decoration.

The porcelain centrepiece takes the form of a wide-mouthed bowl, the inside of which is beautifully decorated with colourful flower wreaths, painted against white grounds, within gilt borders. The bowl’s flared mouth is encircled by a ‘bleu celeste’ (royal blue) band, which is mounted on the exterior with lion heads holding gilt bronze (ormolu) ring handles, and set within a simple gilt frame. The outer body of the bowl features exquisite paintings of winged putti, reclining in a white space, decorated with flowers. Like the mouth, a ‘bleu celeste’ band rings the lower section of the bowl. Four gilt porcelain classical, mythological winged women with lion’s feet support the bowl, lifting it off the ground. These stand on a circular porcelain base, which is decorated with colourful flower wreaths, set against white grounds, and edged with gilt bands.
