Samuel Howitt (1756–1822) was an English painter, illustrator and etcher of animals, hunting, horse-racing and landscape scenes. He worked in both oils and watercolors. He began to exhibit at the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1783 and at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1784. He built a reputation as an expert at animal and sporting subjects, and he made many studies from life at the menagerie of the
Tower of London and elsewhere. His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
