A fine George III period striking table clock in an excellent state of preservation. The elegant mahogany case has a bell top with central brass carrying handle and four brass pineapple finials to each corner. The arched door is bound with a brass moulding and there are well cast brass sound frets to the front. The whole case is of a richly patinated and well figured mahogany.

The fully restored double fusee movement strikes the hours on a single bell and runs for 8 days. The arched dial has a silvered brass centre, flower and foliate corner spandrels and the maker's signature is engraved in the dial centre. The serpentine hands are of blued steel. The strike/silent lever is set within the arch and there is an aperture for the date above VI o’clock. There is also a lever and cord for repeating the hours. The whole back plate is most beautifully engraved with flowers and foliage and this is repeated on the fixing brackets and the backcock apron.
Samuel Stephens is listed on page 738 of Brian Loomes’s 'Clockmakers of the World 21st Century Edition' as working in London in the second half of the 18th century.
