A portrait miniature of a young lady with brown hair and brown eyes. She is wearing a simple low cut white dress and a string of corals. Her hair is worn up with soft curls around her face.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval gilt metal frame with silk to reverse. Signed to the obverse: tump/pinxit.

STUMP, SAMUEL JOHN 1778 – 1863

Born, probably in America, in 1778. Studied at the R.A. Schools, 1796, aged 18. Worked in London & Brighton (August 1809). Exhibited at the R.A. (170), Associated Artists, B.I. (55) 1805-49, O.W.C.S. and S.B.A., 1802 – 1849. Painted miniatures, watercolour portraits, landscapes (including Italian & Swiss views), a few oil portraits, and executed engravings.

He enjoyed an excellent reputation and painted many sitters from theatrical circles. Was a member of the Sketching Society & an old list of members of the Society calls him ‘The American Stump’. He was a prolific artist often signing S.J. Stump Pinxit/No 7 Cork Street/Burlington Gardens/1816 Stump/Miniature Painter.
