Samuel Whitbread (1720-1796) was the owner of London`s biggest producer of beer, producing 202,000 barrels in 1796. Whitbread was an MP from 1768 until his death in 1796. For a similar miniature see National Portrait Gallery, npg.6603 which is possibly also the example sold by Christie`s, King Street, 6.11.01, lot 280. The original portrait by Beechey is at Southill House. Samuel purchased Southill Park and its estate from the impoverished Byngs in 1795 for a total of £93,000 but he died the next year. However, before his death he appointed London born architect Henry Holland (1745-1806) to remodel the house.
The enamel was given to Eliza Elizabeth Pym, by her mother Margaret, wife of Sir Albert Poll and daughter of Eliz Whitbread whose mother Emma married Samuel.
