ANTOINE BOUVARD

1870 – 1955 signed
Oil on canvas 25 ½ x 33 ½ inches
Framed size 30 ¾ x 38 ½ inches

Antoine Bouvard worked during the early part of the 20th century, becoming one of the most prolific painters of Venetian genre with a very particular warm palette.
His paintings show the influence of Felix Ziem, reflecting his love of Venice in the delicacy and fluidity of his use of colour, capturing in his paintings, the warmth and beauty and the unique golden light of Venice.
Bouvard’s works are broad and confidently painted, capturing all the atmosphere and charm of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Both Antoine and other members of the family sold most of their works through Galleries in London and Paris.
His popularity has continued to the present day, placing him amongst the most recognized and respected painters of Venetian subjects.
Bouvard is known to have painted both under his own name and the pseudonym, of Marc Aldine.
His son Noel Bouvard carried on the family tradition but the quality of the light in his work is usually somewhat weaker.
Antoine Bouvard and his family are surely the most recognisable painters of Venice in the late 19th and 20th Centuries.
