The fine quality satinwood veneered case has an exceptional colour; the edging of holly and cross-grained kingwood enhances the warmth of the tone. Satinwood was imported from the West Indies as a decorative timber from the 1760’s onwards. The fashion for neo-classical design made the satinwood ideal for the lighter proportions. The wood darkens over time with exposure to the light and air, which gives well made pieces subtle variation and depth of colour.
The barometer has four dials. The main 10” barometer dial calibrated between 28” to 31” encompasses most the dial making the scale larger than normal and clear to read. Variation in barometric pressure can be observed by the use of the brass set-hand adjusted by the bone set-key below. The dial at the bottom of the case contains a level and is also engraved, signed and numbered; James Gatty, No.130, high Holborn, London. The boxed spirit thermometer can be removed by use of the brass button beneath. The dial beneath the pediment contains a hygrometer, which can be set with the bone set-key.
Sympathetically restored and fully guaranteed.
