"Esquisse pour le dinner chez Cecile Sorel", A study for a dinner party, is satirical sketch portraying a dinner party, hosted by the legendary French actress Cecile Sorel, to mark the occasion of her 50th Birthday in 1923. Dignitaries around the table include Gabriele D'Annunzio, the poet, Auguste-Maurice Barres and sitting beside the hostess, and depicted with a square head, Herbert Asquith, the British Prime Minister 1908-1916. On the reverse of the painting is signed in ink, by the artist, the various names of those attending the dinner party and depicted in the painting, including Lord Asquith. Set into a gilt frame.
