AN IMPERIAL SATSUMA VASE

Circa 1860.
The vase of globular, slightly ovoid, form with a narrow spreading neck, with four raised cartouche shaped panels to the sides depicting chrysanthemums, bamboo, and flowering prunus, decorated in deep blue, green, red and gilt, the base with Japanese characters and a blue ‘X’ within a circle, the mark of the Shimazu Clan.
