A Scottish Agate Pocket Snuff Box of Baroque Form with Chased Gold Mounts
First half 18th Century

Size: 3cm high, 7.5cm wide, 5.5cm deep – 1¼ ins high, 3 ins wide, 2¼ ins deep
Provenance: Ex Private Irish collection
The tobacco box first appeared in the 17th century and the tobacco used took the form of a ‘carotte’, which was grated and inhaled as a powder. These larger boxes are not found after about 1730 when the sale of ready grated snuff became fashionable amongst the aristocracy and small pocket snuffboxes became the rage. Both gold and silver boxes were made, but gold was always held to demonstrate the worth and status of the ‘snuffing’ owner.
