This early 19th century sampler is worked in wonderfully intact colours, including soft blues and pinks, vivid red, and greens and white. The top line is worked in family initials surmounted by crowns, with a verse from the Scottish Psalter beneath (Job 14:1 - 15, "Few are thy days...."), worked in red and, to the side, the words "Jess Tindal Her Work Aged 12 September 1 1835" worked in blue. The rest of the sampler is worked with a variety of birds, including peacocks, and dogs, plants and flowers in a range of containers, and further family initials, and a beautiful blue house with a large bird perched on the roof placed centrally at the bottom, the whole surrounded by a running border of stylised flowers. The sampler is in excellent condition, and is in a high quality ebony frame. Scottish, dated 1835. Height (incl. frame) 21 3/4" (55.3cm) Width (incl. frame) 20 1/2" (52.1cm)
