Scottish Pottery Figure of a Fisherwoman,
Musselburgh, Scotland,
Circa 1835

The rare Scottish pottery figure depicts a fisherwoman with a back creel, which was a woven wicker basket, with a black holding strap at the back, at her feet filled with fish, her arms outstretched offering a large fish, all on a circular hollow domed green-coloured base.

The fisherwoman has a yellow skirt with black lines and a dark blue jacket. Around her neck and over her head is a deep red scarf tied at the back in the typical Scottish pottery colours.

The creels were loaded with fish that the men had caught while line fishing and the fishwives took them to sell inland and to places like Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, and other towns.
