A fine set of four carved oak panels depicting the Four Evangelists, from the late 17th / early 18th century.

The Four Evangelists are the authors of the New Testament Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Since early Christianity the Four Evangelists have been associated with winged creatures:

Matthew is associated with a winged human, or angel, representing incarnation and humanity. Gospel begins with the human genealogy of Christ, and emphasises his humanity.

Mark is associated with a winged lion, representing courage and resurrection. Gospel begins with John the Baptist as a voice roaring in the wilderness. The lion has been a symbol of resurrection since early times, and represented Christ as the king of men.

Luke is associated with a winged ox, representing strength and sacrifice. Gospel begins with the temple duties of Zacharias and dwells of the Passion of Christ.

John is associated with an eagle, representing heaven and ascension. He soared upward in spirit to the heavens to bring back his revelations of mystery to the earth.
