In ‘Shadowed Waters IV’ the horizon is at the top of the painting. The viewers eye must travel up, following the rhythm of reflections, searching for what they recognise in order to make sense of the complete work.
The subject of moving water and light
Both Turner and Constable worked along the River Avon, near Salisbury, Wiltshire. Their paintings read in the naturalistic way, with a foreground and background. Working along the same stretch of river, Rupert deliberately moves closer-in towards the river bank, attracted by the danker, marginal places. He wants the works to produce an intimate moment, placing the viewer ‘within the scene’. In this way aiming for the painting to reach out to the viewer, creating immediacy, intimacy, motion, duration. Almost to have the water lapping at ones feet.
Rupert Muldoon trained as an architect and landscape designer. He has continually sketched and painted landscape, moving between the two disciplines of art and design. He is one of only a handful of English painters working in Egg Tempera.
