WASHING THE SHEEP
HENRY JOHN BODDINGTON
Oil on canvas 23 ½ x 35 ½ inches
Henry John Boddington was a London landscape painter, and a member of the famous Williams family of painters, second son of Edward Williams. In 1832 he married Clarissa Boddington and adopted her name in order to give his works individual identification from those of the rest of his family. By 1840 he had established his name and in 1841 was offered membership of the Society of British Artists - the only member of the Williams family to achieve this distinction. Boddington exhibited works at the Royal Academy, British Institute and 244 works at Suffolk Street.
He was an expert craftsman and is known to have made many preparatory sketches. His works are particularly known for their excellent light effects and fresh greens and they are sought after for their affectionate but realistic depictions of the old English landscape.
He never lived far from the Thames, which is one of his most frequent subjects, although he did tour and work in Devon, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Wales. His early works show the influence of his father and his main subjects were the woodland and village scenes, which brought him public recognition and financial success. In later years his compositions, particularly his Welsh views, grew larger & more dramatic.
Boddington died at the early age of 54 and is today viewed as one of the most talented painters of this artistic dynasty.
