A fine array of Indiamen is seen at anchor alongside Whampoa Island; in most cases their topmasts have been removed, while the cargoes are transferred in smaller craft between Whampoa and the city of Canton a dozen miles upstream. On the shore of the island are the English, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, American and Spanish 'bankshalls' in which stores were housed; the same national flags are represented on the ships at anchor. (The French, whose bankshall would have appeared on the French Island at the left of the picture, were not involved in the China trade at this time).
