A good example of a mid C20th mahogany 8-stack recording barometer by Short & Mason, first retailed by the Army & Navy Stores Limited, and numbered I.30034.

The polished mahogany case is in excellent condition, the lift off cover with five glass bevelled glass sides, and the plinth has a drawer to house the charts(used and unused), all raised on four squat turned feet.

The eight day mechanical clock mechanism has a cylinder platform escapement, the top plate engraved Pat. 3715.02, meaning patent # 3715 granted in 1902 (to Short and Mason for a raised clock mechanism and glued on charts).

The clock drum is fitted with a seven-day chart which covers one full rotation of the drum. The ink trace, or barogram, on the recording paper is a visual record of changes in pressure.

The aneroid barometer mechanism has eight stacked vacuum capsules and utilises a gate suspension, a refinement developed to improve sensitivity.

It has its original glass ink bottle recessed into the case at the left hand side near the drum.

Short and Mason was established by Thomas Short and James Mason in London in 1845. The business was located at 40 Hatton Garden, London, and produced precision measuring instruments including barometers, anemometers, and compasses. They became leaders in the field of barograph design [source:Grace's Guide].

Supplied with ink & charts.
The clock mechanism is to be overhauled, and the barograph is sold with a 3-year guarantee.
Army & Navy Stores incorporated in 1934, hence this barometer post-dates this.
