Painting Oil on canvas with dimensions of 47 x 57 cm without frame and 79 x 89 cm with frame depicting a peasant scene in a typically Italian landscape with the very important prerogative, given the non-customary, to bring down on the left the signature Schatzell pingit 1783.

Main features of this painter, who matures slowly and enriches his style only after having made the infamous Grand Tour, or the trip to Rome to increase its pictorial value through the study of the greatest painters of the present and above all in the past, it is the ability to dive into the landscape itself and the continuous and incessant search for spatiality and light. Compared to Italian painting where in the perspective prevails the centrality, or the use of a single vanishing point at the center of the horizon, which makes possible an ordinary and harmonious result, carefully observing the paintings of Schatzell we can see a substantial structural difference: these painters mean the use of space quite differently than our painters.

In these paintings the perspective is lateral or in one corner of the scene while on the other, by contrast, the main scene takes place leaving the center of the semi-empty painting with strong chiaroscuro contrasts so as to act as a glue towards the two different side scenes . Another fundamental point of our painter is the concept of symbolism: as we have said, this painting is in the figurative search for reality through the use of details and symbols, also as regards the human figure. The concept of man is transfigured by Flemish painters who go very against the current compared to other European canons: man should not be placed at the center of the world, indeed for Flemish painters, things are not like that at all. In Flemish painting, man is no longer at the center of the world but becomes a small part of the Universe, in a continuous search for harmony and spatiality trying to find its own balance in nature, and this painting is a shining example of these connotations.
