This well known studio portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, by Walter Stoneman for the National Photographic Record, and taken in the Cabinet Office, 10 Downing St, at 3pm in the afternoon, of the 1st April 1941, when Churchill was 67, and used for official purposes. The photograph is lightly mounted, glazed, and framed in its original frame. Winston Churchill signature to the bottom right corner of the mount, in black ink.
One of Churchill's unsmoked Don Joaquin Cuesta Havana cigars. Churchill was known to favour Joaquin Cuesta cigars although it was said at some point Churchill had asked the portrait of the cigar maker, to be removed from the band, as it bore to much of a resemblance to a mafia style portrait. Churchill's wishes were carried out, and the portrait removed thereafter.
Good condition to photograph, signature, and cigar
Both the signed photograph and cigar, were given by Churchill at different times, during the late forties, to Major Edward Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby, and later to his batman. Years later the items passed to a close friend of lord Derby's batman, George Miller, Chief Inspector of Oxford City Police.
