This splendid Vanity box has its original brown leather carrying case with black embossed initials M.I.B., It's veneered in luxurious Coromandel with flush fitting carrying handles, all bound and inlaid with brass, and has entwined & engraved M.I.B. initials and all its original untouched condition.
This fabulous Vanity Box contains sixteen sterling silver gilt & hobnail jars all hallmarked William Neal, London 1870, and decorated with a turquoise and white pearl encrusted initials which replicate the carrying case and vanity box. The front has three hand-held mirrors with two further jewellery drawers which can only be accessed by pressing secret buttons. There is also an elaborate gilded removable vanity mirror to the top, two removable accoutrement pads which when removed reveal six equal compartments for jewellery. One of the highlights of this magnificent piece is its removable horseshoe shaped clock, which is in good working order.
This wonderful piece would up to two years to make from start to finish, it was most definitely commissioned. All the Silver is Hallmarked and made by London Silver Smiths “William Neal” they were famous for making Silver boxes, Masonic Medals and Vanity Sets such as this between 1859-1870, the date on this box is 1870 right at the end of William Neals career.
Antique Silver gilt Vanity box comes with fully working locks with tasselled keys.
