Sir Peter Laurie, Lord Mayor of London 1832-1833, was elected Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1823, Alderman of Aldersgate Ward in 1826, and Master of the Saddlers Company in 1833, securing contracts with the Indian army which ensured his future prosperity. He was a director of the Beacon Fire Insurance Company of Edinburgh and of the North British Insurance Company, and president of the royal hospitals of Bridewell and Bethlem, where he pressed for the adoption of the humane methods of the Quaker Retreat near York, which he had visited in 1820
