Small late 17th/early 18th century oak spice cupboard with moulded door. In good original condition including the iron hinges and lock. There is an inscription inside the door reading "Made from oak removed from an old church, by my great grandfather Thomas Holland (when a boy) He was born in 1732. R. R. Davis 1889". The inscription does not tie in with the features of the piece as it would have been very old fashioned by the 1740s and in any case it appears to have been made by a proper cabinet maker and there is no evidence of re-use of timber. The fittings are also typical of the turn of the 17/18th century. Presumably it is, as is often the case, a garbled version of a piece of family history.
