An intimate scene of a young man and woman alone in a music room. The young woman is dressed in a beautiful white dress, and sits playing the square piano, whilst the young man, puts down his book on the window ledge and leans against the panelled wall to the left, facing her. To the right a shaft of light comes through the window and falls on her neck line and dress.

The nervous stance of the gentleman suggests an imminent marriage proposal. This painting depicts a square piano by Muzio Clementi (1752 – 1832), his name can be seen on the piano. Clementi was an Italian composer, pianist, pedagogue, conductor, music publisher, editor, and piano manufacturer. Born in Rome, he spent most of his life in England. He toured Europe numerous times from his long-time base in London. It was on one of these occasions in 1781 that he engaged in a piano competition with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The way she plays the piano with her hands flat was the traditional way. This was the Rolls Royce of pianos, a family would have to be very wealthy to own one.
