Nyasaland was a protectorate of the republic of South Africa and is now known as the Republic of Malawi .
The white rhinoceros is the largest living land animal after the elephant and is the most numerous of all the species of rhino . The front horn can reach 1.3 metres ( 4½ feet ) in length and the rear one 40 cm ( 16 ins ) . The horn is made of a hair like material , keratin , and is today in intense demand for traditional Chinese medicines . Its numbers have rapidly declined over the past 200 years and under modern conservation programs the white and black rhinoceros’s horns are quickly and painlessly cut off under an anaesthetic , thereby removing the main target of the poachers.
