An Unusual Spanish Oil on Rosewood Cross of the Crucifixion of Christ
Late 17th Century

Size: 55.5cm long, 37cm wide, 1cm deep – 21¾ ins long, 14½ ins wide, ¼ deep
Provenance: Ex English Private collection of the late Professor Charles Harrison
A passion image whether an altarpiece in a church or a painting in the home could serve as a focus for prayer. A depiction of the suffering Christ served as a reminder of the sacrifice he had made for the sake of humanity and the feelings of gratitude, pity or pious remorse it inspired in the devout were intended to deepen their love of God. Most Christian traditions have placed great importance on the role that the image, be it narrative, icon or symbol, plays in the process of meditation and contemplation, since looking upon a representation of Christ is meant ultimately to lead to the imitation of Christ.
