This highly realistic, human image was made for private devotional use and is identical to one held in the collections of the Museum in Valladolid, Spain which is attributed to Cano, a pupil of Montanes and King’s painter to Philip IV of Spain. The Christ’s right arm is raised in a gesture of blessing while the other would probably have held a rose alluding to the future ‘Passion’.
Brussels, ‘Splendeurs D’Espagne et les Villes Belges 1500-1700’, 25 Sept−22 Dec, 1985, and published in catalogue vol.II, no. C12, p.477
