| GENTLEMAN |
British artist David Gentleman grew up in Hertford, the son of artists. He attended Hertford Grammar School, the St Albans School of Art, did national service as an education sergeant in the Royal Army Education Corps and then went to the Royal College of Art. After graduating he stayed on there as a junior tutor for two years before becoming a freelance artist.
Gentleman has lived and worked in Camden Town and in Suffolk since 1956, and his travels around Britain and abroad have resulted in a series of highly successful publications which include David Gentleman’s Britain and its companion books on London, the British Coastline, Paris, India and Italy. His work has included watercolours, wood engravings, lithographs, book illustration and design, logos and graphics. He has designed the murals for Charing Cross underground station and over one hundred stamps. David Gentleman’s work is represented in Tate Britain, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. |
