Carstairs was a painter in oil, gouache and watercolour, writer and film-maker. He studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art and exhibited at the Leicester Gallery, RBA, RA and Paris Salon. He held extensive one-man shows, including at the Redfern Gallery, Leger Galleries and Walkers Galleries. His work is in the collections of Trinity College, Oxford, City Art Gallery, Manchester, and Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery, Fife. Carstairs began his film career as a camera assistant and went on to direct forty five feature films. The first was Holiday’s End, 1937, and among his versatile output was a series with the comedian Norman Wisdom, starting with Trouble in Store, 1953. He wrote over thirty books. He lived at Kingston Hill, Surrey.
