Selections From The Hope McCormick Collection of Staffordshire Pottery, Emily Manheim, see page 143 for a Courting Couple on slightly earlier square base where she mentions Beau Brummell (1778-1840). "He was a great friend of George IV, and a leader of fashion in London. He is reputed to have introduced the narrow-waisted jacket with long tails worn with a cravat and a silk top hat. such men were referred to "Dandies" and "Exquisites," and many broadsheets were published in caricature of these fashion-conscious people. The ladies not to be outdone by their companion's sartorial finery complimented their swaines by wearing elegant but exaggerated large hats and poke bonnets, very short jackets or exceedingly long ones, with sleeves called legs-of-mutton.
