Lafayette's voyage to America was made at the age of sixty-seven,having been away from the United States for nearly fifty years. His journey,of which the arrival this plate commemorates as a very early 'souvenir' piece, took in each of the (then) twenty-four States, the guest of two presidents, commemorating three anniversaries of the Revolutionary War, and feted wherever he went.
The printed transfer on the Clews plate depicts the arrival of the 'Cadmus, an American merchantman sailing vessel put at Lafayette's disposal after refusal of President Monroe's offer of a ship. The 'Cadmus' berthed aside Staten Island.
