Horses have always played a large part in Neil Cawthorne's life - he has ridden them and drawn them for as long as he can remember. While riding with the Quorn and Fernie Hunts, Neil Cawthorne started to paint seriously, and was helped greatly by the artist John Kenney, who also lived and worked in Leicestershire.

In 1971 Neil was commissioned by Sporting Life to paint "Mill Reef" and "Brigadier Gerard", followed in 1975 and 1976 by exhibitions in America and London. Over the past twenty five years Neil Cawthorne has painted many Classic, Grand National and other big race winners. In 1979 he helped to found the Society of Equestrian Artists.
