Stanley Anderson was primarily a painter, etcher and engraver of landscapes, urban scenes and figure subjects. He was born in Bristol in 1884 and was initially apprenticed to his father's business as a heraldic engraver. He studied at Bristol School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He became well known as a consumate etcher and engraver and was elected a Member of the Royal Sociey of Painter Etchers & Engravers in 1923. From 1932 to 1950 he was on the Engraving Faculty of the British School at Rome. In 1938 he was chosen as the sole British representative of line engraving and drypoint at the Venice Biennale. He was elected a Member of the Royal Academy in 1941 and was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1951. He exhibited at many of the UK National Societies and his work is represented in public collections in the UK, the Commonwealth and the USA. Later in his career he concentrated on watercolours and his exhibits at the Royal Academy Summer Show would normally sell out within minutes of the opening. In later life he lived in Oxfordshire and died in 1966.

This painting is a watercolour in its original framed condition, with gold strip moulding and wash-lined mount, which is not of conservation quality. A label indicates that it was framed by Alfred Stiles & Sons Ltd of Hammersmith. The title of the work is inscribed on an artist's label on the reverse together with another label indicating that at some stage it was given as a gift to "Iain & Sue". Overall, including the framing, it measures 23(h) by 20.5(w) inches. If a purchaser were to require delivery through the post then for safety reasons the glass would need to be removed.
Not examined out of frame but appears to be in very good condition. There are a few tiny particles that have entered the framing and lie on the mount but these would be removable if the framing were opened up.
