The design features a Royal Mail Coach, pulled by four horses, on the journey from London to York.
This design first appeared in May 1879 when it was titled at the London & York Royal Mail Coach. It was produced for the York Exhibition (May - October 1879).
This picture was produced by Thomas Stevens (1828-1888), a 19th-century weaver from Coventry, famous for his invention of the stevengraph, a woven silk picture.
He exhibited internationally in America, France and Holland, winning some 30 medals and diplomas. The firm continued long after his death in 1888, although production slowed to a trickle by the time the First World War started.
