Less than a hundred paintings by Van Hulsdonck survive and this is a typical example of a work by this rare master. He is recognised for his sympathetic use of light, showing the subjects of his paintings lit to create warm tones enhancing the velvet surface of the apricots and plums, while allowing the fragile wings of the butterfly to be translucent and light. The Wan Li dish, also seen in other works by the artist, has a creamy luminosity its porcelain contrasting subtly with nature's colours. The composition uses a dark ground velvet table cover allowing the fruit a rich intensity.
Jacob van Hulsdonck was born in Antwerp in 1582. He is thought to have been heavily influenced by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, his work showing much of this Masters style. By 1608 he became a Master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke which allowed him to establish a successful studio work in the taste of the day with richly observed still lives of flowers, fruit and insects. Antwerp was the home of other artists of similar status including Osias Beert the Elder, Clara Peeters and Isaac Soreau
