Edward Coleman was born in Birmingham, the son of James Coleman the portrait painter. Edward became a painter of still life, fishing and shooting subjects and portraits. He is also known to have decorated papier-mâché ware which was very popular at the time.
He continued to live in Birmingham and mainly worked there.
Edward exhibited his work, 16 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1813 to 1848; these included a Hare, Pheasant, and Dead Game.
In Birmingham he exhibited work at the Birmingham Society of Artists and its successor, the BSA from 1827 to 1861 showing some 94 works, of which a few were still life subjects but the majority portraits.
He was elected a member of the Birmingham Society of Artists in 1826; and figured in the local directory from 1828 to 1864.
His works have a feeling of the Old Masters, with many glazing layers to give depth & luminosity to the paint.
