Bibl: Victorian Painters – Christopher Wood
The following biographical information has been provided by John Major, a great-great-grandson of the artist.
It was known within my family that H A Major had been a letter-carrier (postman) in the Lincoln Inns Fields area of London and that he was also an accomplished painter. Further inquiries have revealed that he was a considerable violinist, a writer of farces and dramas, and had acted at the Strand Theatre.
Major is also mentioned in the book titled, Profession of the Playwright British Theatre 1800 – 1900 by J.R. Stephens as being a writer of melodramas for East End Theatres such as
the Soho, Grecian and Britannia, combining the activities of artist, actor, postman and hack dramatist for nearly thirty years, he is said to have gone under the sobriquet of, “ The Postman artist of Lincoln’s Inn Fields”.
