Duffield was born in Bath and went on to become a still life painter. He was self-taught but on moving to London he studied under George Lance. He also studied in Antwerp for 2 years with Baron Wappers but eventually returned to Bath. Duffield specialized in painting fruit, vegetables, meat and dead game. Occasionally he painted figures but these were mostly portraits of his wife and son. He exhibited his work, but only a few at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, as he preferred the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street where he exhibited 38 works.
Duffield died suddenly at the age of 47 at the height of his powers. His wife, Mary Ann Rosenberg whom he married in 1850 was a flower painter and they presumably worked together. It is thought that William L. Duffield (FL 1873 – 1880) is his son.
