Louis Neillot was born in Vichy in 1898 and although wounded in the First World War he survived and dedicated himself to painting. He first studied in the Vichy School of Municipal Art and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in the Academy on the Boulevard de Clichy. It was however amongst the Impressionist paintings of the Caillebotte collection that he found true inspiration, particularly in the works of Cézanne and Van Gogh. The paintings of these artist’s had a profound effect on him and he studied their works assiduously visiting the Museum many times. In 1928 Neillot moved with his family to La Ruche which was an area with many artists’ studios on the 15th Arrondissement and he went on to establish a studio in Boulevard Arago living there until 1972.

After winning the Blumenthal prize in 1932 he was admitted as the youngest member of the Committee of the Independent Salon along with Luce and Signac. In 1943 his paintings were noticed by Louis Valtat at the Salon d’Automne and it was during this period that his art began to flourish with the use of more vibrant colours. In 1945 he became Vice-President of the Salon d’Independent and from 1958 until the end of his life he spent several months a year at his house in Saulcet near Saint-Pourcain-sur-Sioule. It was here that he painted still-lives of the fruit in his garden along with the flowers and trees.

Today Louis Neillot’s work can be found in many private collections and museums. Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Musée du Petit Palais, Musée Carnavalet, Musée de l’Ile de France à Sceaux, Musée du Travail à Saint-Denis, Musée de Lyon, Musée du Havre, Musée de la Rochelle, Musée de Chaumont, Musée de Tours, Musée d’Orléans, Musée de Riom, Musée de Sarlat, Musée de Nevers, Musée de Vichy, Musée de Moulins, Musée de Jeumont, Musée de Soissons.
