Peter Collis was born in London in 1929. He studied at Epsom College of Art and Design and lived in Wicklow, Ireland from 1969. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1990 and a Full Member in 1993. Collis had solo exhibitions in Dublin and London and has participated in numerous mixed exhibitions including the annual exhibitions at the RA and RHA. His awards include The Royal Trust Award (1975); Oireachteas, Maurice MacGonigal Landscape Prize (1981); Oireachteas Irish Pensions Landscape Prize (1983) and the James Adam Salesroom Award, RHA (1999).
His work is included in the public collections of AIB, Bank of Ireland, National Self-Portrait Collection, University of Limerick and UCD and in many private collections including Bono (U2), Christy Moore, and Lord Puttnam, the English film maker. His last exhibition was a Retrospective at the John Martin Gallery in London just a month before he died.

Collis has been described by Aidan Dunne of The Irish Times as “the Irish Cezanne” and critic Desmond McAvock wrote of him: “Like Cezanne, he is really more interested in the structure of his scenes than in their transitory appearance …. He can bind his observation into a cohesive, tightly controlled buy always sensitive design”.
